BALOZU PILNI PAGALMI (Riga)

The band Balozu Pilni Pagalmi (Yards Full of Pigeons) was formed in 1994 by MARIS SVERNS. For us BALOZU PILNI PAGALMI seems to be a love rock band, whose each song is a hit and they all are about love.

DEPO (Riga)

DEPO is a band consisting of four teenagers from Riga and they are ususally referred to as one of best Latvian bands today and almost the only hope for the Latvian indie scene. Usually people associate them with Joy Division and The Strokes. On June 1st 2002 they released their first cd, a 7 song ep 'Alepo' (recorded in Tornis studio), performing an acoustic set on a street corner in Riga. John Peel played 2 songs from it on his BBC Radio 1 shows during summer 2002 and named this ep as one of the best albums in August (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/johnpeel/record_box_august.shtml). Needless to say no Latvian rockband has achieved something like that up to now.

ENU KABINETS (Riga)

Founded in 1999 by “veterans” of Latvian and even UK's underground (their previous bands - Sirke, Sarkanais Oktobris, Ray Speedway And The Devils Of Pace …) ĒNU KABINETS quickly became one of the most respected musical teams. Their lyrics are excellent and the music stands far out of the borders of Latvian popular genres. The Fall and football are two main keywords to unlock this band. At the end of 2001 their debut cd “Bellaccord” came out, named after the before-WWII Latvian music label.

And here are some lines from the frontman Martins:

Dear foreigm listeners,

I expect that none of you understand Latvian language, and that could become of problem to understand my lyrics. This is why I will try and explain the main ideas, just to make you sure that they don't contain any dangerous ideas. We sing mostly about our homeland, entertainment, tourism, meeting new friends and, of course, sports.

Plāns Kā Šķērsot Kurzemi (Plan How To Cross Kurzeme) – this piece could be an anthem for hitch-hiking, at least we love to travel like that.

Dziļi Klubā (Deep In The Club) – an ironical song about club life. “Petra, hallo” and “Paul, hallo” are the only phrases from my German studies I have kept in my mind.

Spirāles (Spirals) – song, inspired by our bass player, Kristine, who has a theory that love is just chemistry. On the other hand I just liked such a title for this song (especially, if it could be nine minutes long)

Kaķu Koncerts (Cat Gig) – according to my grandmother, “cat gig” means any kind of non-schlaeger performance. This song is dedicated to Latvian underground rock life, it has a lot of references to people I know. Really, one of my favourite lyrics.

MACITAJS ON ACID (english: PRIEST ON ACID, 'cause they saw a priest doing a mass like he was on acid) are the sons of Latvian immigrants to America. They're the only "trimdas" (Latvians living abroad) Latvian band in the nineties who says: "We're playing fucking punkrock underground rock!" And as we've heard/seen - they do it excellently!
